It can be hard to find your tribe or your squad in high school. Friendship groups change and morph and you can be left sitting on the sidelines. When my daughter was in high school she struggled to find her tribe - she was friends with everyone but didn't have a group of close friends. Now that she is in her twenties she has more friends than you can count. Remember that high school does not reflect what the test of your life will look like. If you're having trouble finding your crew, here are some tips:
  • Join a club
  • Join a sports team - if you're not particularly athletic try something like ultimate frisbee
  • Volunteer
  • Join a youth group
  • Get a part-time job
  • Start a band
Rebecca Sparrow has a book called Find Your Tribe if you want more information.

The movies and the media sell relationships as the ultimate dream. The unsaid message is that you can't be complete or happy until you're in a relationship. Let me tell you from personal experience, that while you're a teenager, it's much better to focus on friendships than romantic relationships. I was boy crazy as a teenager and wasted a lot of time and energy wanting to be in a relationship. The truth is that life does not magically become all right just because you've found Mr Right. There will be plenty of time to couple up the whole rest of your life. For now, enjoy your friends and spend time finding out who you are. Single is not a dirty word.

I love this video of six year old skateboarder, Paige Tobin. She is a viral sensation but she didn't just wakeup one morning, jump on a skateboard and drop down a 14 foot vert ramp. She has been skateboarding since she was two. And she has fallen down a lot! Paige's advice to anyone who wants to learn to skateboard - never give up! I think that advice could apply to a bunch of different things.
