I'm not very athletic but I love Pilates. Cassey Ho has 4.5 million YouTube followers. This is one of her older videos but it's a great introduction to Pilates. If you are overweight or obese (and 27% of Australian teenagers are), then it is harder to exercise. You may feel self-conscious or frustrated. According to a study in Canada in 2014, researchers found that adolescents who did both aerobic and resistance training as well as a modified diet, lost more weight than those who did one or none of the exercises.* Not everyone can afford a personal trainer or a gym membership. Some health funds, such as HBF provide free exercise classes (you have to be 15 to participate in classes unless you bring a parent to a family class). Some gyms and community centres have discounted memberships and special classes for teens. You can't just wake up one morning and decide you're going to jog 10km (especially if you're unfit). You need to build up slowly. It won't be easy, but it will be worth it.

Hula Hooping is a fun, creative way to exercise. Check out Deanne Love's hula hoop tutorials on www.hooplovers.tv. Some of her courses cost money to view but Deanne has plenty of free courses too. The girls at Buf Girls are professionals and know what they're doing. Check out more workouts on their YouTube channel. I'm a summer person and just want to hibernate in winter. If you're having trouble getting motivated to get moving try some of these ideas:
Take a walk by the beach - it's wildly beautiful in winter (make sure you rug up) Go swimming at your local indoor, heated pool Join your local YMCA or PCYC club - they run lots of group fitness classes for discounted prices Go rollerskating or ice-skating - doesn't matter if it's raining outside Find an indoor team sport to join Find some good workout videos online like the BUF Girls one above. I spent a couple of days last week exploring the magnificent Karijini National Park in the North of Western Australia. It is both physically and technologically isolated. There was no phone coverage or wi-fi. It took a little while to adjust, but it was good to have a forced break from technology and social media.
I think it's good for the soul to spend time in the natural environment too. We spent hours exploring the gorges each day. Even if you can't escape to a national park (though there are ones much closer to the city), why not go for a walk by the beach or river or visit your local park. Take a friend, turn off your phones and talk to each other. Let's face it - sometimes it's hard to get motivated. You can do this whole routine on the floor. Good posture is something every teen should aspire to as your body will thank you for it for the rest of your life. Posturebly has five exercises that help improve fitness:
